But I had to ask: What IS the government supposed to do if it is not in the business of legislating right and legislating against wrong? I agree that the separation of church and state is a boon (see D. G. Hart's superb recent book on the subject). And so I don't want the government legislating based solely on the dictates of sacred texts. But every time the government takes a bill and makes it a law, it is saying "There is such a thing as right and wrong--morality--and we acknowledge this to be right and this to be wrong, so far as we understand." Probably what you don't like hearing about is the Religious Right saying "pass this law; it's right because the bible says it's right, period." I totally share your disgust concerning this approach. But one has to recognize that the government is always legislating morality. If it's not legislating morality, what IS it legislating?? Just some thoughts, bro. -ARS Derrak,

First, I’ve been praying for you when I think of you, and for your church in Gainsville and its witness to the gospel.

But I had to ask: What IS the government supposed to do if it is not in the business of legislating right and legislating against wrong? And so I don’t want the government legislating based solely on the dictates of sacred texts.

Just some thoughts, bro.
