Tonight I happened to catch a new documentary on MTV called Britney Spears: For the Record. I must admit that my opinion of Britney has slowly declined over the past few years. I just could not understand the decisions she was making. To me she just seemed like a spoiled brat drunk on the attention of the media and her fans. In my eyes every move she made, even her attempts to stick it to the media were please for more attention.
Well, this documentary has really opened my eyes to who she really is. And what did I discover. . . .? Well, she is just like all of us. A human being who longs to be loved and to have purpose and meaning in her life.
I wonder how differently I would look at the world if I saw everyone through this lens. How would I see the homeless man asking me for money? How would I see the politician I just can’t stand? How would I see my neighbor who is a bit of a red neck? How would I see the single mom, the prostitute, the professional athlete, my wife?
I suppose I would see a little more like Jesus sees people.

Dude… I am ALWAYS skeptical about anything I see on MTV, and of course they want to paint Britney in a light that helps her.. and helps her remain good in the public eye… and of course she wants us to see this side of her and sell more records (I would want the same thing for myself). AND while I would question the validity of how everything is spun on this documentary…
I do admit one thing….
It has succeeded in reminding me that she the creation of God, like the rest of us, with the same hopes and desires and hurts and needs and wants… and I should want to root for her as a person.
She HAS failed in many ways (like myself) and in many ways dug her own grave with the way she chose to go about getting her success…
BUT who is to say… given the same talents and opportunities… that I would not have chosen the same path?
I’m still not a fan of her career (using sex to promote herself)… but I am rooting for her as a person… and I hope she finds love… and her purpose.

Derrak, you made me realize something…..the quest for fame (or infamy – which most kids today don’t understand how those are different) have become a religion.
Think about it – religion is basically a framework, or context, through which we try (and I stress the word try) to live our faith. It provides guidance as we go through our days. It (should) make us stop and think about the decisions we are about to make. Fame for these celebs is not much different. While some people crave the love or acceptance of Christ, Buddha, Allah, Ganesha, etc, they crave what they interpret as our love, delivered through the lens or warm glow of the TV.
It’s probably also part addiction. Ideally, we fill our lives with Love (God, kids, family, friends) so that when something goes wrong, our safety net is there. They fill their lives with what they think is our adoration. when that is gone, they must feel empty, much like an addict without their next fix. They will do anything to get their next dose.
